Reading time calculators convert word count into a duration estimate. Publishers use them so readers can plan their attention.
The basic formula
Reading minutes is roughly word count divided by words per minute. WordCounter uses 200 WPM for silent reading by default.
Speaking time is different
Presentations and scripts need a slower pace. We estimate speaking time at about 130 words per minute.
Why estimates vary
Technical jargon, code blocks, and dense citations slow readers. Light narrative prose can feel faster than the average.
Using estimates in publishing
Add reading time near the top of blog posts. Readers appreciate honesty, especially on long guides.
